Exploring the Tsukuba Express (TX): A Convenient Railway Line in Ibaraki

Hi, I’m Taro! 🚆 Living in Ibaraki Prefecture, a region where cars dominate daily transportation, I rarely use trains. However, when I do, my go-to option is the Tsukuba Express (TX). This private railway line, along with JR’s Joban Line, serves as one of the major railways in Ibaraki.

A Brief History of Tsukuba Express (TX)

The Tsukuba Express (TX) is a relatively new railway line in Japan, having opened in August 2005. It connects Tsukuba Station (Ibaraki) to Akihabara Station (Tokyo) in just 45 minutes at its fastest, making it a crucial transport option for commuters and students alike.

Key Stations on the TX Line

The TX line stops at several important stations, with Asakusa Station and Kita-Senju Station being among the most notable.

1. Asakusa Station 🏯

Asakusa is famous for its tourist attractions, including the Tokyo Skytree and Senso-ji Temple. The station also offers connections to the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Toei Asakusa Line, and Tobu Skytree Line. However, it’s important to note that TX’s Asakusa Station is slightly far from other railway stations, making transfers somewhat inconvenient.

2. Kita-Senju Station 🚉

Kita-Senju is a major hub, connecting to the JR Joban Line, Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and Tobu Skytree Line. It is currently ranked as the 6th busiest station in the world in terms of daily passengers! I occasionally use this station when heading to central Tokyo.

The Quality of TX Commuters

From my personal experience, TX has some of the most well-mannered passengers in Japan. I have never heard of any incidents such as groping or other crimes. This could be due to the high number of researchers and university professionals in Tsukuba. Additionally, Kashiwa-no-ha Campus Station hosts prestigious institutions like the University of Tokyo and Chiba University, while stations like Kenkyu-Gakuen and Nagareyama-Otakanomori are home to relatively young, affluent, and dual-income families. This demographic might contribute to the overall pleasant commuting environment.

Modern and Secure Trains

The TX-3000 series, introduced in 2020, is the newest model in service. This train operates at a maximum speed of 130 km/h and is equipped with CCTV cameras for enhanced security. In fact, starting in November 2024, TX plans to install CCTV cameras in all TX-1000 and TX-2000 series trains, with full deployment expected by March 2025.

TX Extension Plans

Excitingly, the Tsukuba Express is planning major extensions in the future. The proposed extensions include:

  1. Northward Extension: The TX will extend from Tsukuba Station to Tsuchiura Station, an important stop on the JR Joban Line.
  2. Southward Extension: The TX will expand from Akihabara Station to Tokyo Station, allowing easier access to the Shinkansen and other major train lines.
  3. Further Expansion to Tokyo Bay Area: There are also plans to extend the line to Ariake and Tokyo Big Sight, a crucial business and event district near Tokyo Bay.

Final Thoughts

The Tsukuba Express is a fast, clean, and safe railway line that continues to evolve and expand. Whether you’re a commuter, a student, or a traveler exploring the greater Tokyo area, the TX provides an excellent transportation option. With future extensions in the works, this railway is set to become even more convenient and vital in the coming years. 🌟
